SLATE ROOF REBEDDING AND REPOINTING MELBOURNE

Re-bedding and re-pointing is an Art

With over 30 years in slate roofing our team has seen it all.

When the ridge cap mortar has deteriorated beyond the point of resealing, the term “rebed and point” is employed. When this happens, the old mortar must be removed, and the tiles and caps must be washed free of it.

DOES YOUR ROOF NEED REFURBISHING?

Although most roofs are durable and reliable, time plus wear and tear can still lead to the deterioration of the roof. Periodical checks or assessments are necessary in the upkeep of your roof. When there are leaks and other issues, your roof may be in need of rebedding and pointing.

What is Rebedding and Pointing?

Eliminating the old cement from below the ridge tiles and relocating the bound ridge caps in order to keep roof tiles in place is called Rebedding. It is done when the cement of the ridge tiles are greatly damaged or cannot be salvaged through resealing. Having this done can improve your roof functionality by preventing any moisture build-up that may lead to mould and more.

Once rebedding is completed and dried, a process called “Pointing” is applied. Pointing is the process of applying cement to the corners and in-betweens of roofing tiles with a waterproof sealant to strengthen and seal it.  Just like rebedding, it aims to prevent the roof from leakage and increased moisture. The “Rebedding and Point” process is vital in the roof’s defense against rainwater and humidity, the longevity of the roof, and its efficiency.

Signs that we need Rebedding and Pointing

Roof Leakage

Roof Leakage is one of the major signs that rebedding and pointing is inevitable. Leakage can lead to bigger, more complicated, and costly issues later on.

Broken Ridge Tiles

During inspection, broken ridge tiles are easy to spot. Broken tiles always mean that there is a big possibility of leakage of water in the property and sunlight seeping through the roof.

Excess Moisture

Excess moisture, same with leakage, leads to greater problems such as  mould, mildew, and discoloration of ceilings and walls.

Debris in the Gutter

If there is debris (broken tiles, pieces of mortar, etc) found in the gutter, it may mean that the tiles may be loose, have cracked and the pointing may have lost some parts.

Shifted Tiles

Shifted or Loose tiles is a sign that the old cement cannot hold the tiles anymore. If not rebedded, loose tiles pose a risk to safety.

Missing Tiles

Shifted or Loose tiles is a sign that the old cement cannot hold the tiles anymore. If not rebedded, loose tiles pose a risk to safety.

Broken Pointing

Broken pointing will appear as gaps in the ridge capping of your roof. Gaps like this heighten the likelihood of water getting into the property, which may cause big structural damage later on.

What are the advantages of Rebedding and Pointing?

Prevents Mould

Mould results from leakage or the presence of excess moisture. This can only happen if you have loose, broken tiles or pointing. Rebedding and Pointing properly seals the gaps and remedies the cracks so that mould is prevented.

Prevents Property Deterioration such as wood decay

Wood decay, discoloration of ceilings and walls, and sagging ceilings can be prevented when the tiles and pointings are tightly resealed.

Added Weather Resistance

Tight, properly sealed and installed tiles and pointing make your roof sturdy again. Roofs need to be weather resistant to protect the homes.

Improved Safety

When your roof is in top condition, the risk of accidents and hazards like internal structure collapse, electrical fault, and falling tiles are substantially reduced.

Cost Effectivity

Proper maintenance of the roof by rebedding and pointing prevents future damages and accidents that may cost you a lot.

Enhanced Aesthetics

Rebedding and Pointing will make your roof look like it’s brand new , making your roof stand out and catch the eyes of passersby.

What is the process involved in Rebedding and Pointing?

  • Removing the ridge capping – To achieve a clean surface, each ridge cap tile is removed separately and the old mortar is chipped away.
  • Rebedding – Within the bedding frame, adhesive cement is applied, and each ridge cap tile is repositioned properly into place.
  • Pointing – When the rebedding is done and dried, a sealant is applied to point the ridge capping. The ridge capping, cement, and tile must be tightly put together and sealed for greatest effectivity and clean finish.

How much does it cost to Rebed and Point?

There is no fixed cost when rebedding and pointing. The costs of repairs will depend on the extent of the damage and the size of it, plus labor expenses. Most roofers and contractors charge from $200 to $300 per 10 square feet.

How long does it take to Rebed and Point a roof?

Rebedding and Pointing may take an average of 2 to 3 days, depending on the weather conditions. Contractors and Roof experts highly recommend giving your roof regular checks and evaluation to determine damages and the corresponding servicing required
